Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your Windows 10 PC will continue to function after this date, Microsoft will cease providing critical updates and services, including security patches and technical assistance, putting your device at increased risk.

Why This Matters to Business Owners

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is essential.
  • Software Compatibility Concerns: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, some programs may malfunction or stop working entirely.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Running outdated software can jeopardize compliance with industry regulations, potentially leading to fines or legal complications. Staying current helps you avoid these pitfalls.

Your Upgrade Options

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the strict hardware requirements for Windows 11, which may result in upgrade errors.

If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) to maintain security temporarily
  • Transition to a Linux operating system
  • Note: Ignoring the deadline is risky and not advised.

Always back up your important files before making any changes to prevent data loss during the upgrade process.

Extended Security Updates for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, you can subscribe to Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Keep in mind, this is a temporary fix, available only for one year following the support end date.

To enroll in ESU, you can either pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a free option requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. While OneDrive provides 5 GB of free storage, additional space may be necessary for larger data volumes.

Don't delay—register for ESU before October 14 to ensure continued protection.
